KG+SELECT 2021

9 artists will be selected from among the applicants and be invited to exhibit their work in the former Kakuchi Elementary School.

The 9 groups of selected artists will receive a grant of ¥ 200,000 for the purpose of producing their exhibitions in the former Kakuchi Elementary School. A catalogue accompanying the exhibitions will be produced and distributed to professionals, press and visitors for free during the duration of KYOTOGRAPHIE. The exhibitions are promoted through the KYOTOGRAPHIE Media platform. Our KG+2021 Jury will be visiting the exhibitions to select the Grand Prix. The winner will be awarded a grant of ¥ 500,000 to produce an exhibition for next year’s KYOTOGRAPHIE.

Application Guidelines

<Applicant eligibility>
• Artists and curators of any age, gender, nationality, profession, or prior experience
• Individuals (or units) using photos, video or installations including photographic elements
• The artworks’ themes can be freely chosen

<How to apply • Application period>
Applicants must fill out the application form on the KG+ website and submit their art portfolio (as digital data).
Application period: 12 April – 6 June, 2021
# Registration via the application form will not be possible after the deadline. We do not accept any applications by email.

<Selection criteria>
• The artistic quality of the works, their message, as well as innovativeness and originality of the exhibition method
• The artist’s growth potential and artistic prospects

<Selection process>
• The screening process will be carried out by the members of the KG+ Panel / KG+ Executive Committee / KYOTOGRAPHIE. (The official result will be announced around mid-June on the KG+ website.)
• Each of the 9 selected artists will be offered a classroom in the former Kakuchi Elementary School as exhibition space.
• Exhibition period: 17 September - 17 October, 2021.
• Unselected applicants will not be able to host exhibitions under the KG+ SELECT program. However, applicants are welcome to simultaneously apply for the KG+ program.
• Each of the selected groups of artists will receive ¥ 200,000 as a subsidy for the production of their exhibition. The grant does not have to be used for any specific purpose. (It is not required to hand in receipts. The subsidy will be paid out in Octorber)

<About the exhibition venue>
• Each of the 9 selected applicants will be assigned a classroom space in the former Kakuchi Elementary School as exhibition space. We will contact artists about the assignment after the selection has taken place.
• During the exhibition period, 1 to 2 members of the KG+ staff will be on site as the person(s)-in-charge for general issues concerning the whole exhibition venue. Artists or representative staff of the participant are not requested to be continually present on site. However, please note that staff from the KG+ management will not be stationed in individual exhibition classrooms.
• KG+ staff at the venue will be responsible for operating lighting, projectors, etc. However, we kindly ask participants to provide instruction manuals.
• Sales of artworks and books etc. is permitted inside the exhibition venue. However, the artist/representative staff alone is responsible for all matters regarding sales and transactions. KG+ will not be held responsible for any related assistance or loss.
• Book consignment sales can be arranged in the KG+ shop. (The venue for the shop is not yet fixed.)
• Damages to any part of the classroom equipments and facilities are not acceptable and the applicant may be held liable. After the de-installation of the exhibition, participants are asked to return all equipments to their original location.
• Please do not hesitate to consult KG+ staff if (additional) partitions etc. within the classroom are necessary. However, additional fees will apply.
• Participants may bring and use additional lighting equipment inside their respective exhibition classroom. There are 2 to 4 electricity plugs in each classroom.

<Selection of the Grand Prix and finalists>
Members of the KG+ Panel / KG+ Executive Committee / KYOTOGRAPHIE will visit all of the exhibitions and carry out the screening process. The winner of the Grand Prix is set to be announced at the KG+ Closing Party. However, there may also be cases in which no winner is selected.

<Submission guidelines>
Applicants should gather the following materials in one single folder, accessible in an online storage format, and provide a link in the application form.
• The artwork’s title (or title of the series), exhibition statement (English statements should be kept to max 400 words; please write in third-person), the artist’s profile and/or artist’s website.
Applicants are welcome to refer to the statements published on the 2020 KG+ website as reference.
# Note: In case of a group exhibition the information should be provided by the curator
• Exhibition floor plan (freehand drawings are also accepted) and photos of the exhibition venue. The document should be prepared in .pdf or .jpg format. Slight adjustments made to the plan during the actual exhibition are permissible.
• Proposed exhibited works (5 – 10 jpg. files). The image files should be labeled as follows: serial number_artist name_image title_copyright=the series’ title

※ Resolution: 300dpi, Size 210mm or less (long side)
• Artist’s recent photograph (the image file must be labeled with the applicant’s name)
# File format: 300dpi, 210mm in length.
# Please note that all the materials provided may be edited by the KG+ office for publication. The KG+ office will be responsible for editing the content of all related material, including the promotional booklet.

<Application fee>
¥ 5,000 (to be submitted by bank transfer or Paypal.)

<Terms and conditions>
• Exhibitors are responsible for all costs and charges regarding the venue and equipment rental, print production, framing, installation and de-installation of their own exhibition.
• Exhibitors are responsible for the daily surveillance in their exhibition space. KG+ will not be held responsible for any related assistance or losses.
• The festival organizers will be allowed to use artist-credited images of exhibition works on the KG+ website, printed handouts and other material for promotional purposes.
• Exhibitors who withdraw their application or fail to exhibit after having been officially chosen for a KG+ exhibition may be charged a compensation fee (to cover the necessary cost for re-design and re-production of promotional materials).
• Exhibitors bear full responsibility against any third party claims of damage, rights infringement, etc.

<KG+SELECT Grand Prix>
From among the 10 groups of nominated participants, one group will be selected as the winner of the KG+SELECT Grand Prix. The winner will be allowed to hold an exhibition at next year’s KYOTOGRAPHIE international photography festival, and receive the following support:
• A grant of (up to) ¥ 500,000 for producing the exhibition
• Venue use free of charge
• Promotional material and information printed in the KYOTOGRAPHIE international photography festival catalogue

<Available support>
• Participants might be offered discount for applying events such as masterclasses and educational programs held by KYOTOGRAPHIE. Information will be announced by e-mail
